As a Full Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Pharmacology/Toxicology at the University of Toronto, and Senior Scientist in the Hurvitz Brain Sciences Program at Sunnybrook Research Institute, Dr. Lanctôt is an active researcher in clinical pharmacology and has published over 250 manuscripts.

She is recognized for her approach to using biomarkers to identify and predict response to new treatments for NPS.  Currently, she is a Principal Investigator on several repurposing trials, including a clinical trial which examines methylphenidate as a treatment for apathy in patients with Alzheimer's disease, funded by the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Lanctôt is also exploring the effects of N-acetylcysteine on cognition in patients with vascular cognitive impairment.
