Helena Kim
MD, PhD, FRCPC
Dr. Helena Kim is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto and SCOPE lead at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). She is also a psychiatrist at the University of Toronto, Student Health & Wellness. Dr. Kim completed her CIHR-funded clinical research fellowship in complex mood disorders where she developed clinical decision-support tools by analyzing datasets from randomized controlled trials (RCT). She also holds a PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology where she examined downstream targets of mitochondrial dysfunction in bipolar disorder, with postdoctoral training in predictive modeling focusing on genetic markers of treatment response in depression. Her work to date produced decision-support tools to guide pharmacotherapy decisions in major depressive disorder, treatment-resistant depression, late-life depression, and perinatal depression. She also led a PSI Foundation-funded study examining racial disparities in antidepressant treatment following a psychiatric consultation, identifying structural inequities and opportunities for improvement through standardized care pathways and targeted quality improvement interventions.
Dr. Kim develops clinical decision support tools and treatment algorithms using biostatistics and machine learning applied to randomized controlled trial, electronic medical record, and human molecular and imaging datasets for the treatment of complex mood disorders. The ultimate goal of her research is to translate these data-driven insights into earlier treatment optimization, reduced exposure to ineffective treatments, and more personalized interventions for patients with complex mood disorders across diverse populations.
