Annual Report 2022-2023: Consultation/Liaison Psychiatry

Division Reports

Submitted by Dr. Rima Styra, Director, Division of Consultation/Liaison Psychiatry

The Division of Consultation/Liaison members provide essential consultation regarding mental health issues for the medically ill as well as participate in education, research, and advocacy both nationally and internationally.

The division is enthusiastically moving to the expansion of our educational offering as an Area of Focused Competence (AFC) by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Dr. Tan has been instrumental in leading this successful initiative. We are also discussing a partnership with the Brain and Medicine fellowship program to increase training opportunities for both programs. Fellowship training in CL is highly desired and we are pleased with the increasing number of fellows that will be joining us.

The Division has partnered with the PHPI (Psychotherapy, Humanities and Psychosocial Interventions) Division in participating in the research ECHO program. This allows for our division to participate in sharing projects and obtaining input from participants to enrich the research. We will  also be expanding our ECHO involvement to include several communities of practice.

We have been working on an educational repository, which includes practice questions to assist residents with their Royal College Exams as the timing of these exams has transitioned to occur during their CL rotations. The division members have successfully adopted and integrated the Competence by Design (CBD) curriculum into the CL program, and we are now undertaking a quality improvement project led by Dr. Alan Wai.
