Dr. Mark Rapoport is a Professor and residency program director of the geriatric psychiatry division of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto.  He is a clinical scientist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, and a past-president of the Canadian Academy of Geriatric Psychiatry (CAGP, 2012-2016).  He was also a member of the Canadian Driving Research Initiative for Vehicular Safety in the Elderly (CanDRIVE 2003-2021), an associate editor of the Canadian Geriatrics Journal (2009-2021).  Dr. Rapoport received his medical degree from McMaster University, and subsequently completed his psychiatry residency and fellowship in geriatric neuropsychiatry at the University of Toronto.  He founded the CAGP National Review Course in Geriatric Psychiatry and Geriatric Psychiatry Online Course in 2012, an annual event that won two awards from the Canadian Psychiatric Association (CPA): The 2014 Award for the Most Outstanding Continuing Education Activity in Psychiatry in Canada (academic), and the 2016 Paul Patterson Award for Innovations in Education Leadership. He was the scientific co-chair for the 2009 International Psychogeriatric Association Congress in Montreal, Quebec.  He is a Distinguished Fellow of the CPA and the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry, and won the 2014 CAGP Award for Outstanding Contributions in Geriatric Psychiatry.  He is also the acting head of Geriatric Psychiatry and co-director of HR and ambulatory care for Sunnybrook Psychiatrists.

 

Research Synopsis

 

His main research focus is on motor vehicle collisions in older adults with neurological and psychiatric diseases and their treatments, and he has received research funding from the Canadian Institute of Health Research, the Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration and Aging, Sunnybrook Psychiatrists, and other peer-reviewed funding agencies.
