Dr. Kyle Daniell, MD, FRCPC

University of Toronto

Dr. Kyle Daniell is a psychiatrist with a strong clinical, teaching, and research background, currently appointed as a Lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. He holds a Medical Doctorate from the University of Toronto (2019) and completed his psychiatry residency training at the University of Toronto in 2024. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Dr. Daniell currently practices as a staff psychiatrist at the University of Toronto’s Health and Wellness Centre, an interdisciplinary clinic serving university students with complex psychiatric and mental health challenges. His clinical work focuses on transitional-aged youth and emerging adults, where he integrates psychotherapeutic approaches and collaborative care within a multidisciplinary team. Additionally, he provides psychiatric care in an interdisciplinary team to adolescents and transitional age youth experiencing homelessness through Inner City Health Associates at Youth Without Shelter.

Dr. Daniell has a broad clinical interest and is particularly interested in psychotherapy. During his residency he trained extensively in psychodynamic psychotherapy, family and couple’s psychotherapy, and interpersonal group psychotherapy. Dr. Daniell is actively involved in program development and administration at the Health and Wellness Centre, supporting integrated mental health services for complex patients, shared care, and stepped care models.

As an educator, Dr. Daniell has demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentorship. He has taught medical students and psychiatry residents since 2019, covering a range of topics such as clinical interviewing, personality disorders, and physical examination skills. He was recognized with the University of Toronto Resident Teaching Excellence Award (2019–2020) for his outstanding contributions to medical education. He also served as Chief Resident at North York General Hospital in 2023, where he coordinated clinical teaching and resident wellness initiatives. He has also participated in residency selection as a CARMS file reviewer and interviewer.

Dr. Daniell’s scholarly work includes research on schizophrenia and impaired illness awareness, and somatic symptom disorders and barriers to recovery. He has published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research as Primary Author and has contributed to grant writing, data management, and patient education resource development, including leading the creation of an innovative website for patients with chronic medical symptoms.

Dr. Daniell’s dedication to clinical excellence, teaching, and collaborative care makes him a valued member of the University of Toronto Department of Psychiatry.

Recent Publications

Dr. Daniell was first author on a peer-reviewed publication titled "Exploring the relationship between impaired illness awareness and visuospatial inattention in patients with schizophrenia," published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research (2021). This study examined the neurocognitive underpinnings of insight in schizophrenia and has been cited in subsequent work on illness awareness.

Honours and Awards

Dr. Daniell has received several awards in recognition of his excellence in teaching, professionalism, and leadership. He was the recipient of the University of Toronto Resident Teaching Excellence Award (2019–2020), given to educators whose teaching evaluations rank in the top 10% across teaching activities. He also received the Resident Professionalism and Collegiality Award from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (2020–2021), which recognizes a psychiatry resident who exemplifies exceptional professionalism and community engagement. Nationally, Dr. Daniell was awarded the Louise Joanne Twerdy Leadership Award and Bursary by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (2017), a $10,000 bursary recognizing leadership, compassion, and community impact. Earlier in his training, he was nominated for the Golden Stethoscope Award (2018), honouring medical students who demonstrate both academic excellence and compassionate clinical care.
