Research Synopsis

Dr. Junchao Tong's current research is focusing on the possible role of adult neurogenesis in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia, drug addiction, and neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease. Specifically, immature neuronal protein markers including Bcl-2, doublecortin, PSA-NCAM, TUC-4, and NeuroD, which are expressed by proliferating, differentiating, and/or migrating immature but not in mature neurons, are being examined in autopsied human brain from normal subjects and patients of a variety of diseases. Adult neurogenesis is an exciting new research field and holds the potential to discover the cause of and to design new therapies for many human neuropsychiatric disorders.
