Dr. Andrew Smith is a the Medical Lead of the Interprofessional Pain and Addiction Recovery Clinic (IPARC) at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), a unique resource for integrated care for patients with chronic pain and concurrent problematic substance use and/or mental health conditions.  He is also a staff physician at Mount Sinai Hospital and at Toronto General Hospital where he co-leads a pain clinic for patients with sickle cell disease.  He is an executive member of ECHO Ontario Chronic Pain, which is a telementoring initiative to enhance skills transfer, knowledge translation and specialized care to primary care clinicians in the community who seek to manage their own patients who have complex chronic pain more effectively.

Dr. Smith obtained his medical degree from McGill University and then completed residency training in both adult and child neurology at the University of Washington.  He subsequently focussed on the genetics of autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions.  Noticing that a significant portion of these patients would develop problematic substance use and also were more susceptible to a variety of chronic pain conditions later in life, he became the first in Canada to complete a combined fellowship in Pain Medicine and Addiction Medicine at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Smith’s focus is on treating complex chronic pain in individuals who use drugs and innovating models of interprofessional care.  His primary research interests are in knowledge translation, technology enabled collaborative care and education.
