The Department of Psychiatry, Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto and The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) are seeking to recruit an Academic Psychiatrist - Scientist to support its Schizophrenia Division. This role will hold a scientific appointment through CAMH’s Campbell Family Mental Health Research Institute (CFMHRI) with primary appointment in the Slaight Family Centre for Youth in Transition and secondary appointment in the Tanenbaum Centre for Pharmacogenetics.  The successful candidate will build a program of research focused on genomics research in early psychosis and multi-episode psychotic disorders, as well as provide outpatient clinical care for early psychosis populations as part of the Slaight Centre Early Psychosis Intervention Services, Child Youth and Emerging Adults Program. As a Scientist, the successful candidate will be required to establish local, national, and international collaborations, provide supervision of undergraduate, graduate, post-doctoral research trainees, and technical staff. The successful candidate will be expected to lead research activities, maintain an active publication record, and secure extramural funding for these activities. They will also disseminate research results through presentations at academic meetings and conferences and communicate ideas to key decision makers. Participation in leadership advisory groups at CAMH and externally is expected.  There are also teaching opportunities with undergraduate and post graduate students, psychiatry residents and fellows.  The successful candidate will have an academic position description of Clinician Scientist and must be eligible for a full-time academic appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, at the University of Toronto. The effective start date is July 1st, 2025, or a mutually agreeable date shortly thereafter.

The Schizophrenia Division at CAMH is a large and dynamic academic clinical division that provides high-quality clinical services to individuals experiencing schizophrenia and related psychotic disorder, coupled with exceptional teaching, and world-class research.  Situated within the Schizophrenia Division, the Slaight Centre is Canada’s largest clinical research centre dedicated to innovative research and clinical care for youth and young adults in the early stages of a psychotic disorder. The Tanenbaum Centre for Pharmacogenetics is an international leader in gene-guided treatment for mental illness and serves as a hub by which lab-based discoveries are translated broadly into clinical care. The successful candidate will join a diverse and collegial team of over 40 psychiatrists and scientists across the Schizophrenia Division, and will provide exemplary team-based psychiatric care for people experiencing the early stages of schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders within the Slaight Centre Early Psychosis Intervention Service.  The successful candidate will be expected to participate fully in the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs of the University of Toronto Department of Psychiatry.

The successful candidate will have excellent clinical psychiatry skills, as well as a demonstrated excellence in working as a member of multi-disciplinary teams.  Experience working with early psychosis populations within outpatient teams is required. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in neuroscience, genetics, or a related field, and have a strong track record of research productivity in the area of psychiatric genetics related to schizophrenia and psychotic disorders, including evidence of high quality and high impact research publications, and a track record of external grant funding and awards commensurate with their career stage.  The incumbent will have a desire to work in and contribute to an active academic environment, with a commitment and experience in teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.  

Applicants must hold a Doctor of Medicine (MD) and be certified (or eligible for certification) by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, must be licensed (or eligible for licensure) with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Academic rank will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.  Remuneration is in accordance with the compensation of a psychiatrist-scientist in the province of Ontario, and is comprised of a combination of clinical and research stipends, fees for service, funding through Academic and Educational Trust Funds, and on-call stipends, and will be commensurate with academic rank, qualifications and experience.
