Garry Hurvitz Paediatric Brain Medicine Fellowship

Applicants must review the University of Toronto Psychiatry Fellowship Program’s application requirements carefully before initiating an application. 1. Curriculum Vitae - four pages maximum
An up-to-date academic curriculum vitae.

2. Medical Degree and Specialty Certification

• For international medical graduates, copies of the applicant’s medical degree and relevant specialty or subspecialty certification are required to be uploaded.
• For current domestic residents, a letter of good standing can be submitted at the time of application, indicating their anticipated graduation date from their residency program. 

3. Letter of Intent – three pages maximum 
A letter outlining the applicant’s interest in GH-CBMH, brain medicine, and their suitability for the fellowship. The letter must include:

• The name(s) of the proposed supervisor(s), including one designated primary supervisor based at SickKids.* 
• A brief description of the proposed fellowship focus area related to complex paediatric brain and/or mental health conditions. 
• Must include three to five clearly defined learning objectives that describe the clinical and research experiences the applicant intends to pursue during the fellowship.
• A proposed 12 month fellowship plan detailing: 
  • The clinical programs (ambulatory and/or inpatient) to be undertaken*.
  • How each clinical experience aligns with and supports the stated learning objectives.

4. Letter of Support – one page maximum 
A letter of support from the SickKids primary supervisor confirming their commitment to mentorship and oversight for the duration of the fellowship. 

5. References
Contact information for three referees, one of whom must be the applicant’s Residency Program Director.

*The applicant must independently identify and secure a primary supervisor at SickKids. Supervisors and clinical programs will not be assigned, and the Azrieli Brain Medicine Program and GH CBMH do not participate in supervisor matching or clinical program planning, which must be guided by the supervisor.

• Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applicants are expected to carefully review the eligibility criteria and application requirements and to follow the instructions outlined in Appendix I in the RFA. Failure to meet the eligibility requirements or comply with the application instructions may result in disqualification.Previous recipients of the Azrieli Brain Medicine Fellowship funding are not eligible to reapply.
• Applicants must be a Canadian or international medical graduate who have completed residency and/or fellowship training in one of the following disciplines:
  • Paediatrics
  • Paediatric subspecialties
  • Child and adolescent psychiatry
  • Paediatric neurology
  • Paediatric neurosurgery
• All training required must be fully completed prior to the start of the fellowship (July 2027). Applicants who have not completed training by this date are not eligible. See Application Instructions for full certification requirements.
• Applicants are solely responsible for identifying and securing a primary supervisor based at SickKids. The Azrieli Brain Medicine Program and GH CBMH do not participate in or facilitate supervisor matching.

Only applicants who meet all eligibility criteria will be considered. Exceptions will not be granted.

The conditions within scope of this Fellowship are outlined below and reflect the complexity of real-world clinical presentations and the interdisciplinary nature of paediatric brain medicine.

Examples of Fellowship Focus Areas (but are not limited to): 

• Mental health outcomes following paediatric traumatic brain injury
• Autism across the lifespan
• Mental health complexity, including co occurring mental health and neurodevelopmental disorders
• Complex neurogenetic disorders associated with brain or mental health conditions
• Epilepsy and psychiatric comorbidities
• Optimizing care for children with overlapping brain and mental health conditions
• Transition to adult care for youth with complex brain and/or mental health disorders
• Functional neurological disorders
• Sleep disorders across the spectrum of brain and mental health conditions

Applications will be reviewed by the Brain Medicine Paediatric Fellowship Selection Panel, comprising of representatives from the Azrieli Brain Medicine Fellowship Program and the GH-CBMH. Applications will be adjudicated competitively based on the following criteria:

1. Eligibility Compliance
Confirmation that all stated eligibility requirements have been fully met.

2. Quality and Feasibility of the Proposed Fellowship Plan
The strength, clarity, and feasibility of the proposed clinical training plan, including the appropriateness of the clinical experiences and the likelihood of achieving the learning objectives within the fellowship.

3. Alignment with Fellowship Scope and Focus
Demonstrated alignment with the fellowship’s emphasis on complex paediatric brain disorders affecting ABC, and with interdisciplinary approaches to brain medicine.

4. Supervision and Mentorship
Appropriateness and strength of the proposed supervisory and mentorship structure, including demonstrated commitment and expertise of the primary supervisor.

5. Commitment to Excellence, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
Evidence of alignment with the fellowship’s values of excellence, equity, diversity, and inclusion in clinical practice, research, and professional conduct.

6. Strategic Alignment
Alignment with the strategic priorities and initiatives of the GH-CBMH.

This fellowship combines rigorous training with meaningful professional development opportunities. Acceptance of the award carries the following expectations, each of which is designed to support the fellow’s academic, clinical, and career growth.

• Fellows complete required competency assessments in collaboration with their supervisors, benefiting from structured feedback that supports advanced interdisciplinary clinical training.
• Fellows acknowledge the Azrieli Brain Medicine Fellowship Program and GH-CBMH in all scholarly outputs arising from fellowship work, enhancing academic visibility.
• Fellows participate in the Azrieli Brain Medicine Fellowship Program and GH-CBMH educational and knowledge translation activities, including conferences, rounds, and fellowship related events, gaining opportunities for leadership, presentation, and interdisciplinary networking.
• Fellows complete a final written report summarizing fellowship activities and outcomes and gain experience in abstracts, manuscripts, and grant applications, supporting long-term academic development.
• Fellows maintain engagement with the GH-CBMH by notifying the Centre of subsequent scholarly outputs arising from the fellowship, fostering sustained collaboration and impact.
• Fellows participate in donor stewardship activities coordinated by the Azrieli Brain Medicine Fellowship Program, GH-CBMH, and SickKids Foundation, gaining experience in academic advocacy and communication.
